Educator Enhancement Workshop: Observational Astronomy

The workshop goals

The training is designed to expand the knowledge of physics teachers who have undergone workshops on the basics of astronomy (at Tel Aviv University or Kinneret College) and are working with astronomical photographs. Astronomical photographs are taken using telescopes around the world. Recently, a robotic telescope was built at Kinneret College to promote the research work in astronomy by students in Israel. In this training, the teachers will learn to analyze the photographs according to the research topics they choose to engage in. The training will touch on observational issues ranging from the solar system to the ends of the universe. This year, a robotic telescope was inaugurated at the Center for Astronomical Education at Kinneret Academic College to assist students in studying astronomy and space science. The center’s staff will carry out the training, emphasizing providing tools for teaching astronomy in practice.

Learning outcomes:

1. Planning observational research work and ordering astronomical photographs accordingly
2. Introduction to software for processing astronomical images – AIP4WIN
3. Acquaintance with projects in observational astronomy suitable for physics studies
4. Teaching methods of exploratory learning in astronomy
5. Acquaintance with information bases of astronomical data to carry out research works

The learning method:

The workshop was online. Most of the learning and activities in the training are carried out via the Internet and online meetings at regular times. There were nine online meetings; only the last tenth meeting was face-to-face. Learning in an online course requires self-discipline; you must set study times during the week and dedicate the time needed to study the subjects studied. The participants in the workshop will perform activities and assignments every week.
